CAS Match Stages for September 21, 1996

Lil' Maverick (Warren age 12) and I (Doc Early) went to the Cherokee Cowboys shoot on Sept. 21, 1996 and had a great time. It was a 5 stage match with some very creative stages and props. I "borrowed" their complete writeup about the 5 stages and inserted my photos that I took and a few comments here and there. Just wanted you to see what this great shoot looked like. Stage 1 : Unforgiven

SETTING: William Munny and the Schofield Kid have came to Big Whiskey, Wyoming to set things right. The Kid settles a score with a mean cowboy and Bunny takes on Skinny, Little Bill, and his deputies. Itís Academy Award Theater and you get to play two roles.

PROPS: outhouse with hinged door, saloon door, 2 tables, saloon props

TARGETS: 5 breakable, 2 steel for shotgun, 5 steel for pistol l

WEAPONS: 2 pistols and 10 rounds, 1 shotgun and 2 rounds

(Click pic for big image) PROCEDURE: Each "on-deck" shooter will prepare a target board with 5 breakable targets for the outhouse portion of the stage. Both pistols are loaded. One is holstered, the other is held in the shooter's hand(s) at a lowered 45į angle before the start. The shotgun is outside the saloon doors, empty with the action closed. The shooter stands facing the closed outhouse door.
(Click pic for big image) At the beep he opens the door while keeping the pistol pointed in a safe direction. He shoots the 5 breakable targets, holsters the pistol, and moves to the staged shotgun.He loads it and then moves through the saloon doors. He must say loudly "Who owns this establishment?" before engaging the 2 shotgun targets. Then he clears the shotgun and lays it on the table, draws the second pistol, and engages the 5 steel pistol targets.

PENALTIES: 5 seconds for each missed target 10 seconds for each procedure violation 10 seconds for failing to say the line


Stage 2 : Law of the Lash

SETTING: Lash Leroy is on the trail of the Black Hat Gang. He finds their camp and decides to wait until dark to ride in and take them. They made no fire but one outlaw is reading his own wanted poster by candlelight or maybe he's just looking at the picture.

PROPS: horse, bullwhip, candle and a stand, desert props

TARGETS: 5 steel for pistol, 5 steel for rifle (one is a stop target)

WEAPONS: 2 pistols and 10 rounds, 1 rifle and 9 rounds

(Click pic for big image) PROCEDURE: Both pistols are loaded and holstered. Rifle is loaded and placed in scabbard on horse. Whip is coiled and hung on saddle horn by a posse member. Shooter mounts the horse and holds the reins in both hands, hands not touching the whip or the saddle. At the beep, shooter says loudly 'whoa, Charlie" (or whatever your horse's name is) before dropping the reins. Then he must take the whip and use it to knock over the candle, after which he drops it to the ground safely.
(Click pic for big image) Then he draws his pistols and engages the 5 pistol targets once each with each pistol. Any shooter choosing to shoot both pistols simultaneously must let the scorer know before starting the stage. Pistols are returned to holsters before pulling the rifle to engage the 4 rifle targets twice each and engaging the stop target with the ninth round.

PENALTIES 5 seconds for each missed target 5 seconds for not knocking over the candle 10 seconds for each procedure violation


Stage 3 : Coffeyville

SETTING: Coffeyville, Kansas, October 5, 1892. Five members of the Dalton Gang ride into town to pull off not one but two bank robberies at the same time. It was a brazen plan that failed because the citizens armed themselves and fought back. Four outlaws died; only Emmett Dalton survived to face years in person. The Hooting started when the Daltonís realized that armed citizens were surrounding the bank.

PROPS: wall with window and door, bag of loot, town props

TARGETS: 5 large steel, 5 small steel

WEAPONS: 2 pistols and 10 cartridges, 1 rifle and 10 cartridges

(Click pic for big image) PROCEDURE: Both pistols are loaded and holstered. Rifle is loaded and held at port arms. The shooter stands behind the wall, facing out the window. The bag is an the ground near his feet. When ready he says loudly Let's go" and waits for the beep. At the beep he engages the 5 small targets twice each through the window, opens the rifle's action and leans it against the wall safely. He picks up the bag and moves through the door into the "street". He stops, with at least one foot inside the first circle, draws a Pistol and engages the 5 large targets. While still in the first circle he holsters the first pistol, drops the bag Inside the circle, and moves to the second circle. With at least one foot inside the second circle he draws the second pistol and engages the 5 small targets.

PENALTIES: 5 seconds far each missed target 10 seconds for each procedure violation


Stage 4 : Frontier Gun Control

SETTING: Sheriff Bat Masterson has brought gun control to Dodge City. Cowboys must check their shootin' irons at the office of the local law dawg when they hit town. But when John Wesley Hardin and his gang rides in, an unarmed man can't count an Bat to protect him. It's time to retrieve his pistols from the lock-up.

PROPS: table with lockable box, doorway, window, Marshal's Office sign

TARGETS: 5 steel for pistol, 2 steel for shotgun

WEAPONS: 2 pistols and 10 rounds, 1 shotgun and 4 rounds

(Click pic for big image) PROCEDURE: Both pistols are loaded and placed in the box. The 4 shotgun shells are also in the box. The shotgun is empty, action closed, leaning against the wall by the window. Shooter stands outside the doorway waiting for the beep. At the beep he moves through the doorway to the table, picks up the key and unlocks the box.
(Click pic for big image) He removes the first pistol and engages the 5 pistol targets through the window, holsters it, takes the second pistol and repeats on the same targets. After holstering the second pistol, he loads the shotgun and engages the 2 shotgun targets twice each. All shooting is done through the window.

PENALTY: 5 seconds for each missed target 10 seconds for each procedure violation


Stage 5 : Five Card Colt

PROPS: table, chair, deck of cards, saloon props

TARGETS: 4 steel card suits (at minimum range, widely spaced)

WEAPONS: 2 pistols and 10 cartridges

PROCEDURE: The shooter places the loaded pistols ~ the table pointed downrange. The deck of cards is an the table face down. The shooter starts sitting with both hands on the table, pales down. A. the beep he draws the top card from the deck and turns it face up on the table. He picks up a pistol and twice engages the target of the suit that matches the card. He continues to draw and turn over one card at a time and engage (twice) the matching target before drawing and turning the next card. Five cards must be drawn.

PENALTIES: 5 seconds for each missed target 5 seconds each for shooting the wrong target 5 seconds for each card over five that is turned over or that falls off the table. Warning: muzzle blast may blow cards off the table. In such case the penalty Will apply. 10 seconds for each procedure violation.


Over 50 Cowboys participated. A warm morning, and hot-shootin' all around. Great shed for shade, refreshments, working on guns, etc. Fine lunch was served mid-day. The Cherokee Cowboys treat a cowboy right. (Click pic for big images)
