Reloading The .327 Federal Magnum

The .327 Federal Magnum
The .327 Federal Magnum

(above is .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum, .327 Federal Magnum)(bullets: 100 gr plated, 100 gr RNFP, 115 gr RNFP & 113 gr with Gas Check)

Loads for the “Big Boy” of the .32 calibers, the .327 Federal Magnum:
(Note: Most ARE MAXIMUM loads, you may want to use 10% less to start.)
(See note on Powders below or read all about various Powders.)
You can shoot the .32 S&W and the .32 S&W Long AND the .32 H&R Magnum since all are shorter cartridges than the .327 mag. but the same bullet diameter.
Due to different barrel lengths, type of bullet, seating depth, primer type and other factors, you may not get near the FPS charted. It is just a guide and the reason you should start under these charges and work up.

Bullet size is usually .314″ (lead) and Jacketed is usually .312″ in diameter.

Note that there is quite a difference in the lead .312″ RNFP and the .314″ lead Wadcutter of the same 90 grain weight. Some lead bullets are .313″

(Note H110 & W296 are the same as of 2008 as is HP-38 & W231)

97, 98 & 100 Grain LEAD Round Nose or SWC (There have been loads for this size bullet

and you will see some on the .32 H&R mag page. Of course, they are milder. If you want to use this weight, for .327 Mag, be guided by the .32 H&R page on the 90 & 100 grain RNFP .312″ but suggest the start loads & go up. if your bullet is .314″, the 90 gr. wadcutter is a better guide)(also see the 115 grain lead RNFP.312 or .313″ loads below)(I will add loads as I experiment with the 100 grain lead bullets I have on hand)

Discussion: All the powders listed are fast to medium burning powders in small quantities for these lighter bullets. The JHP would be the defense bullet to use.

The very light, 60 and 71 grain bullets are meant for a .32 auto and for the .32 long and not really intended for the .32 H&R and certainly not for the .327 mag, but times are tough and hard to find jacketed bullets, so I am experimenting with these little bullets. I seriously doubt the accuracy of the little bullets at high speeds, but they should hit pretty hard at close range.

A bullet with a copper gas check or copper plating is best for INDOOR ranges to keep lead vapors out of the air.
